The fibulae type, bow brooch is one of the oldest metal clothes fasteners. Both ornamental and functional, brooches like this using an inbuilt pin where used from pre roman iron age cultures like La Tene to Hallstad through Roman and Saxon to as late as Viking age. We still use a afety pin, which is just the most recent incarnation of this fantastic clever design.
This delicate brooch has the addition of our three bells, shamanic charm added onto it. I liked the design so much that I have kept the first one to myself and use it to fasten my scarves during autumn and winter.
The Bow brooch itself has been hand forged out of a single piece of silver. Making it requires forging out a very long pin, which then forms the spring for the brooch. I use the design of the spring as a bail in my arroewhead and Odin pendants, so it wasn't a far cry to add another one of our favourite pendants onto it.
